Day 9 of #TheArchCons of the Aztecs, Toltecs Teotihuacános tour was spent exploring Teotihuacán, a city that flourished between 200 B.C. and A.D. 750. They visited the Pyramid of the Feathered Serpent, the Avenue of the Dead and the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon. What a wondeful trip!
#TheArchCons Southwest Field Representative Mandy Woods engaged with preservation-minded people and organizations at the 2025 Arizona Site Steward Conference in Camp Verde, AZ. We're thankful opportunities like this to gain new perspectives on current issues in cultural heritage preservation.
Day 8 of #TheArchCons Aztecs, Toltecs included visit to Cholula which is best known for the Great Pyramid of Tepanapa and an exploration of the beautifully preserved murals at Maya-influenced Cacaxtla which means “place of the merchant's backpack" in Nahuatl.”
Day 7 of #TheArchCons Aztecs, Toltecs andTeotihuacános tour: a tour at the Uriarte factory, Mexico’s oldest ceramics company, the zocolo (plaza) of Puebla, one of Mexico’s best preserved colonial cities, and the new Amparo archaeological museum.

An exploration of the ruins and splendid Olmec stone carvings at Chalcatzingo. Located in the southern portion of the Central Highlands of Mexico, Chalcatzingo is estimated to have been settled as early as 1500 BCE.
#TheArchCons Aztecs, Toltecs and Teotihuacános tour is still going strong! On Day 5 they visited Malinalco, one of the most unusual sites in Mexico. It required a hike of 750 feet and 426 stairs to reach stunning temples carved out of the bedrock by the Aztecs around A.D. 1500.

A visit to Cuicuilco, the UNESCO World Heritage site of Xochicalco, and a stay at Hacienda Cocoyoc, is a restored sugar plantation established by Cortez in 1529.

Day 2 of #TheArchCons Aztecs, Toltecs and Teotihuacános tour!
Away from Mexico City to explore Tula, the great Toltec capital founded in the 10th Century by Topiltzin. From here the Toltec warrior class ruled a vast territory and controlled nearby obsidian sources and extensive trade networks.

Day 8 of #TheArchCons Belize and Tikal Tour:
Back to Belize to explore the hilltop palace of Cahal Pech, a lovely, understated area with beautiful views & colorful birds singing in the treetops. And then to the Belize Zoo, with spider monkeys, jaguars, and the tapir (the national animal of Belize.)
Day 5 of #TheArchCons Belize and Tikal Tour!
The group explored the ancient city of Tikal, located deep within the Guatemalan rainforest. Tikal is one of the largest archaeological sites in the Mayan world. It covered 25 square miles and had a population exceeding 75,000.

The tour group was supposed to travel from Belize through the Guatemalan border to reach Tikal. Unfortunately, that didn't happen as planned! (Rest of story in first comment)

Today the group visited Caracol, where the incredible stelae and inscriptions tell tales of bloody wars in which Caracol triumphed over its nemesis Tikal. Caracol covers 200 sq km & once had a population of 100,000.
