I'm reversing this period door back to having its original arrangement of rimlock and knobs.
More recently it had a modern mortice sashlock and lever handles.
These photos show how I've rebuilt and repaired the door in stages.

Not something I recommend for DIY
Leave this one with me 😂

No offence to painters & decorators, but I do prefer the 'decoration' of mother nature.

Think road kill, well ...
This is 'street salvage'
Picked up on my walk to the workshop this morning.
I use these washers to take up the slack between door knobs.
I may not be able to save the planet, but it all helps in a tiny way.

"LOCK HANDMADE" it says
Well over a century old
Respect
It had no keys, but a local locksmith has the skills required to provide new ones

Work in progress on one of the doors in the workshop.
I spend much of my time stripping & sanding paint off of period doors.
One reason I can't bring myself to do any (re)painting!
IMHO mother nature's decoration is better than anything man-made.
They enter painted, leave bare!

A seemingly unremarkable cupboard door in a semi rural cottage. Approx 200 years old.
It's survived countless occupants, not one has removed/replaced the door.
The hinges, not at all elaborate, are nonetheless beautiful in there timeless simplicity.

DIY by someone who didn't really know what they were doing? ...
Or a fashionable faux pas by someone who should know better?
I recommend period door furniture for period doors.

As well as lining up the middle and bottom rails with the existing door on the right of pic 1, I was also able to match up the rimlatch and small brass knobs.
It's the little things that make a big difference.

A thread 3/3
A before and after ...
How this period door arrived at the workshop.
Now my work is done on this one, and it's ready to go home to the house it was made for, more than a century ago, in NW London.

After scraping and wire brushing for 20 minutes, plus a little WD40, and this antique hinge is good to go for another 117 years.

It may be dark, but I prefer the original decorative finish to this door, to the present trend of white.
Discovered in the process of removing the top panels, to convert to glazed doors. Three in all.

It was important that this trio of vintage door knobs remained together, and not sent to different addresses.
It's for that reason it took a while to find the right 'new' home for them.

20th century manufacturer SAM PARKES was rightly proud to put his name on the bottom of the brass on these beautiful wooden rim knobs.
And I'd like to believe he would be pleased that they have been saved from landfill and are to be rehomed, reused and admired again.

Restoring mother natures artwork.
A U-turn of swirling grain meandering around a knot junction.
On the bench today, a Victorian 4 panel door complete with panel mouldings.

Authentic repairs using genuine reclaimed antique materials.
I needed to remove one panel moulding, to close a gap in the panel.
You should be able to see the fixed join (squint and hold your phone away from you)
The original cut nails didn't survive, but I had salvaged some. ♻️

It's been mainly all about repairs in the workshop this week.
I'm working on four reclaimed Victorian 4 panel doors, that have had various locks and catches fitted over the years.
For the repairs, I use timber offcuts from trimming the doors to size.

Salvaged.
Look at the size of this Victorian hat and coat hook!
It's made of cast iron, and I've cleaned up one of the acorn finials, just to show how beautiful it is under all that paint.

7 unwanted donated pine doors

Today I've collected 7 doors.
Unwanted Donated
Despite Victorian appearance, these were made in my lifetime!
Made during my career, probably in the 80's, but made in traditional style, with mortice & tenons, wide lock rail + panel mouldings.

Antique cast iron hinges with the manufacturer's name on them.
I get a buzz when I'm cleaning up old cast iron hinges, and I find a foundry name on them.
As I'm scraping the paint off ... 🤔 "Oooh, I haven't seen a JAMES for ages" 😂

A before and after.
A mid 20th century rimlock with bakelite knobs on a late Victorian door.
The rimlock, made by "Century", has been cleaned up and restored in the workshop, and reproduction solid brass knobs have replaced the bakelite ones.

2 more doors returned home this afternoon after a sleepover at the workshop. The kitchen and bathroom doors were already stripped and waxed, so I just had a few minor repairs to do, plus sorting out some furniture issues.
4 more doors to tinker with.

Ugly filler being removed
Repositioned mouldings once the filler is removed
It's satisfying to dig out the unnecessary filler behind the panel mouldings on a period door. It would have taken time to put it in there, and it certainly takes me time to remove. But it only takes a few seconds to tap the mouldings back where they should be.
