Stephen Miller’s wife told JD in her podcast that the Gilded Age is quite “woke”, since I’ve never figured out what that really means now I’ll have to watch, I’ve seen 1 & 2 other than it’s mostly women’s stories, tho it does have an upper middle class black family& 2 gay men …

[Gladys] Oh, nothing."

"[Mrs. Scott] As the pastor's wife, I shouldn't have to remind you of the verse, 'For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.'
[Cousin] Dorothy, let's lower the temperature.
[Mrs. Scott] My patience has worn thin, and I can no longer hold my tongue.
[Mrs. Kirkland] Perhaps you should heed your cousin's warning.
[Mrs. Scott] Perhaps you should get off your high horse. You have enjoyed a certain kind of privilege amongst our cable here in Newport that has created an illusion for you.
[Mrs. Kirkland] And what kind of illusion is that?
[Mrs. Scott] The kind that has enabled you to act without grace manners and impunity. But I am not from Newport. We will be attending the ball as a family. My husband has made a rather nice donation, because that is actually the respectable thing to do, Mrs. Kirkland...
[Dr. William Kirkland] I intend to make a life with your daughter and a family. I have ample means to provide for and protect her.
[Mr. Arthur Scott] And you understand that a marriage is between a man and his wife... not her parents or your own?
[Dr. William Kirkland] (beams) Yes, sir."

"[Bertha] Now you're both at the club, and I'm here alone? I can't believe it.
[George] Oh, yes, you can. You should've been expecting something of the sort.
[Bertha] Why should I?
[George] Because he's right. Your ambition is out of control.
[Bertha] We're both ambitious.
[George] True. But when was the last time you asked us what we wanted? (He crosses to the door) You should be surrounded by your family right now. But look around. (Strides out)"

Post image Post image "[Bertha] I have a letter from Mrs. Astor today... There were too many objections when she tried to cancel the Newport ball. She wants me to take it over.
[Ward] (Chuckles, she joins) Do it. Make society your own. It's your turn.
[Bertha] If I did, I think I would end the ban on divorced women...
[Ward] I'm curious. Would you invite me?
[Bertha] No.
[Ward] Their offense is not as damning as mine?
[Bertha] You made a choice. Mrs. Fane is facing a situation that is no fault of her own.
[Ward] And Mrs. Drayton?
[Bertha] Men are forgiven for their indiscretions and women are punished. It's not fair. The truth is, there but for the grace of God go us all.
[Ward] It appears that I'm not going anywhere in society, unless you can save me.
[Bertha] I can't. I haven't the power. And nothing is more perilous than to overestimate your own power."

[Bertha] That's what they won't forgive." #TheGildedAge #TheGildedAgeSeason3 #HBOseries #drama #periodpiece #AlluringAugust
