Maggie O’FarrellのThe Marriage Portrait 読了。約130,000語。最初に史実として主人公の少女(と言っても公爵夫人)が夫に殺されるという事が明記されて始まり、少女の生い立ちと、さあいつ殺されるのかという場面とが交互に描かれるので、読者はその二つが交差する結末に向かって読み進めることになる。少女が絵を描くのが好きなので、美術に興味がある人の方がよりこの小説を楽しめるのではないか。世継ぎを産む事が求められる女性の苦しみは今も立場によってはあまり変わらないのではないか。
