In 1700s very few women learned to read/write; most were denied an education. Slaves were denied #therighttoread. Allowing everyone the right to a public library was opposed. MelvilleDewey was a librarian who worked in NYC/Boston, inventing what we now call the DeweyDecimalSystem.
