Up on a peaceful ridge above a river which flooded again recently in Whittier, North Carolina during the Hurricane Helene disaster (so very many of Western North Carolina people are still really struggling; one wonders why???) This ridgetop was my favorite place to go for respite and peace for many years. It was my niece's mountain home. She's a wonderful fellow artist, writer and beautifully skilled artisan bookbinder. She and her partner relocated to Iowa almost two years ago. I really miss them; they're both wonderful folks.

Lauren will be binding the small edition of poetry I'm writing as one tier of 'The Parkways Projects.' I'm thinking about an edition of 100 for this hand-crafted chapbook, if my niece doesn't kill me for asking her to do an edition that size! There'll also be a larger printed edition of the chapbook as well. Title has yet still to emerge from the words.

The image is of what she told me was called "firethorn' berries by the locals." They have beautiful jade green leaves and brilliant crimson berries. The soft-focus background I thought was the best presentation for this beautiful plant. I made a lot of shots in the wind that day, letting the berries whack my iPhone. I should take to calling them "whackberries," lol... I miss those berries too.

Whittier is located just seven miles from Bryson City, ten miles from Cherokee, and the gateway to the Smokies and the Blue Ridge Parkway. One hasn't to wonder long if you knew me, why I loved that place so.
