We can't wait for warm weather like what people were enjoying at the Charlesbank Beach in 1940. 

In 1936, a 300-foot-long swimming beach was constructed along the Charles River near the Longfellow Bridge in Boston. It closed in 1949 due to severe pollution.

Maria Stewart (1803 - 1878) was one of the first women to give a public address and one of the earliest voices to contribute to Black Feminist thought. She lived at 81 Joy Street. This photo is of an 1832 article from The Liberator.

Going out tonight? If you were a Bostonian before 1962, you would have likely been heading to Scollay Square. This area was known for its theaters, bars, and more. It was demolished in 1962 and replaced by Government Center.

George Washington Forbes (1864-1927) was the first Black librarian to work in the Boston Public Library system. He began working at the West End Branch in 1896 when it first opened. He was an integral part of the West End’s Black and Jewish communities.
