From Senses to Sense: Theories of Historical Experience and Sensory History Lars Mittelstaedt argues that sensory perception is a foundational, embodied source of historical meaning by demonstrating—through Columbus’s narrative and the theories of Rüsen and Koselleck—how impressions such as sight, sound, and smell are transformed into enduring narrative and semantic orders that structure human orientation in time.
