This is a landscape photograph taken on a beach on the Spanish island of Formentera. At the very top is a strip of clear blue sky; below that lies a stretch of the Mediterranean Sea, dark blue in the distance and more turquoise closer to the shore. The lower half of the photograph shows a pebble beach, with in the foreground the remains of a crooked, weathered tree, whose roots still hold it upright. (Photo: 31 May 2011)

This is a horizontal photograph of a tree stump. When the photograph was taken, the tree had only recently been felled. The annual rings are visible and can still be counted. A heart has been carved into the stump using a chainsaw. The faint green of the forest is visible in the background. The photograph was taken in a forest near the Swiss town of Davos on 3 August 2011.

This is a landscape photograph of a church building. On the left is a blank exterior wall, consisting of tall, vertical concrete slabs. On the right, at right angles to this, a section of the side wing is visible, featuring around 12 tall, vertical windows. Most of them are a pale shade of blue. I took the photograph at an upward angle from the corner between the two wings. The upper part of the photograph therefore takes the form of an inverted triangle, with the apex pointing downwards. Within this, the sky – also in a light blue hue – can be seen with a few light clouds. This is, incidentally, a section of St. Gregory’s Church in Aachen, in the Burtscheid district.
