"Tolita" refers to the archaeological Tumaco-La Tolita culture, a pre-Columbian civilization that thrived on the Pacific coast of Colombia and Ecuador from approximately 600 BCE to 350 CE. Named after its major sites, the culture is renowned for its skilled metalworking, particularly in gold and platinum, and its elaborate ceramic sculptures. They also built large earth mounds called tolas, cultivated crops, and practiced cranial deformation.
