Former Katima traffic officer in court for pocketing N$750 from traffic fine
A former Katima Mulilo Town Council traffic officer was granted bail of N$8 000 in the Katima Mulilo Magistrate’s Court yesterday for allegedly stealing N$750 from cash she had received from an offender she had issued a ticket to.
Precious Kasika, who was arrested on corruption-related charges, allegedly issued a traffic fine of N$2 000 in March 2020 but only handed about N$750 of the N$1500 the offender was able to pay over to council.
Anti-Corruption Commission spokesperson Josefina Nghituwamata says the arrest follows a whistle-blower complaint, with allegations arising that the officer altered the official receipt book and changed both the amount and the trial date on the ticket in an attempt to mislead authorities.
The three charges she is facing are corruptly using office for personal gratification, forgery and money laundering.
Kasika opted to apply for legal aid, and the matter has been postponed to 30 July to allow her to obtain representation.
The state suggested bail of N$3 000. However, magistrate Beatrice Sibalatani set bail at N$8 000.
She was remanded in custody pending bail payment.
