Police urge public to put safety first during Easter weekend Niël Terblanché As thousands are preparing to travel home or to a holiday destination over the Easter long weekend, the Namibian Police have called on motorists to exercise caution and adhere to safety measures on the roads. In a statement issued by the head of the police’s public relations division, Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi, urged motorists to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy before setting off. This includes checking brakes, tyres, lights, and indicators. “Obey all traffic rules and regulations at all times. Avoid overloading both passengers and goods. Do not drink and drive,” she urged. Drivers were also reminded to wear seatbelts and ensure their passengers do the same. “Courtesy and consideration towards other road users, including pedestrians and cyclists, is the key to reducing accidents,” she said. Shikwambi appealed to all citizens to act responsibly during the Easter holiday period. “Let us all play our part in making this holiday safe for everyone,” she urged. Shikwambi also urged the nation to secure their homes before departing for their various destinations. Travellers were also encouraged to inform a trusted neighbour or relative to keep an eye on their property during their absence.
