Pixel art headshot of Revali from the hit game Breath of the Wild
Hot take: a lot of Revali slander unjustified. Like, yeah, he’s a dick to Link and all, but all things considered he's honestly earned the right to a bit of an ego.
One of the features that's always stuck out to me about his design is the cheek marks, which, in these new games, usually indicate that a given Rito is a juvenile; coupled with his smaller stature compared to other Rito we see, that points to him being a fair bit younger than some might expect, likely around the same age as Link and Zelda at the time of the Calamity (around 17 years old). Despite his young age, Revali is able to achieve mastery over wind and become the fiercest warrior among the Rito, battling the anointed knight of Hylia to a stalemate (something we’ve yet to see anyone else do in a fair 1v1) and surviving the longest of any champion against their respective Blight (even when at a SEVERE disadvantage).
Furthermore, we learn indirectly in Tears of the Kingdom that while Daruk, Urbosa, and Mipha all come from powerful bloodlines going back to the days of Hyrule’s founding, Revali doesn’t have sage ancestry to draw power from. It is said in BotW that Teba, the Rito who takes Revali's place in the second battle against the Calamity, does not have any blood relation to Revali; we learn in Tears that he and his son Tulin are actually the direct descendants of the ancient wind sage Raphica, and given that it’s been established that they are not related to the former champion, it’s safe to assume Revali does not share this heritage, meaning he was able to achieve all of the above purely through his own skill and determination.
