Mog’s reactions are the flip side of the usual childlike ‘wonder of Christmas’ stuff, highlighting just how odd some of our traditions must seem to an outsider. #TygertaleAdvent

One day Mog woke up and nothing was right in her house. Christmas arrives in the Thomas household, bringing with it jolly uncles, aunts on tippy-toe and a walking tree.

Sniffup! Raymond Briggs was good friends with the legendary Puffin Books editor Kaye Webb. Despite his reputation for being more grumpy than Father Christmas he found himself sucked into Kaye’s world of Puffin Club outings and general merriment 1/2 #TygertaleAdvent

Had a super nice Christmas lunch and book swap with friends from the Bath Spa Uni MA in writing for young people yesterday. We all took a book and selected one at random. I got this beautiful edition of The Night Before Christmas, illustrated by P.J. Lynch. Perfect for #TygertaleAdvent
Four lions pull a woman in a sleigh through the snow in this illustration by Sara Ogilvie from John Masefield's The Box of Delight featured in the Folio Society edition.
One of the many pleasures of reading classic Christmas books is the way they open a window to the past. The best of them highlight the small details and forgotten language of Christmas and few books do this more delightfully than The Box of Delights.

Something brand new for #TygertaleAdvent today. Santa's First Christmas is a dazzling new festive favourite from Mac Barnett, author of 'How Does Santa Go Down the Chimney?' and illustrated by Sydney Smith whose snowy classic 'Small in the City' I'll be featuring later in the month.

Cover art by Antony Maitland. A cloaked figure with a horned helmet stands in the snow. In front is a large black dog with glowing eyes. Behind are creepy stick like figures surrounding a boat in a forest.
"A cold, wet day in December. The worst kind of day for the backlands. The clouds were so low they seemed to trail their mists in the treetops and already, at half past three, it was dark within the forest."
The Giant Under the Snow by John Gordon.

Thank you for resurrecting #TygertaleAdvent Jake. I have always enjoyed it and you make me aware of gems I've missed.
Most famously we meet Ernest / Ernie again in 1973, crossing paths with Father Christmas as he is coming to the end of his own rounds. ‘Still at it mate?’ he asks cheerily. But more of that perfect book later in the month.

Sledges to the Rescue is one of the first books that Briggs illustrated and wrote himself. The drawings are sublime and interact beautifully with a text which provides some early examples of themes that the author would return to throughout his long, brilliant career.

In 1963, long before the Snowman or Father Christmas, Raymond Briggs wrote another snowbound adventure. Sledges to the Rescue takes place during the author's own childhood, on Christmas day in the 1930s.
