Researchers must work collaboratively with the communities they aim to involve in their studies – starting from shaping the research question, continuing through to the study’s design and implementation, and ensuring meaningful follow-up once the research concludes. This kind of partnership fosters trust, enhances the relevance of the research to those communities, and ultimately leads to greater engagement and participation.
How can we address the underrepresentation of minoritised ethnic groups in dementia research?

The real test is marrying the knowledge between artificial intelligence models with the expert information we have from genetic, clinical, and disease biology. If we get enough people trained in both fields simultaneously, it could propel this area exponentially over the next few years.
💻 By using machine learning, @uclqsion.bsky.social researchers are uncovering genetic clues with smaller sample sizes; opening new doors for understanding and treating rare dementias. Read more: buff.ly/lR8EdxU #WorldAlzheimersMonth #UCLDementia
Quote from Dr Vivi Antonopoulou, UCL Centre for Behaviour Change, as part of World Alzheimer's Month 2025: "We are interested in understanding how people respond to living with a robot in their home. Then we want to take this study further and design robots specifically for people living with dementia. That may include changes to the robot’s communication style or its ability to provide memory prompts for people with dementia."

For more than 100 years, doctors have known that the eyes can be used as a window to the rest of the body. Now, thanks to the power of AI and big data, we can find information hidden within retinal images and use this information to pick up early signs of neurodegenerative diseases.
How might AI help us to detect dementia through retinal scans? 👀 We spoke to Prof Pearse Keane (@ucleye.bsky.social) about pioneering studies in the emerging field of #oculomics ➡️ buff.ly/UJkjgXJ #UCLDementia
It is really helpful for us to understand what interventions can be taken to reduce the risk of developing dementia among people with known risk factors. We already know that wearing hearing aids can reduce the risk of dementia among people with hearing loss so in planning our research, we wanted to see what could be done to reduce the risk among people with diabetes.
Can certain diabetes medicines, like Ozempic, reduce the risk of diabetes patients developing demenita?
We spoke to Dr Esther Hui (@uclpsychiatry.bsky.social) about her research on the topic. #UCLDementia
