Feels like #UKSGForum2024 was just yesterday 🥲 For the nostalgic of heart—here's a link to the deck for my Keynote on AI, with a few additional slides on pathways forward and resources.

During my presentation at #UKSGForum2024 I commented on some of the pros and cons of generative AI. I mentioned that AI-based research integrity tools are, perhaps ironically, helping solve some of the problems that gen AI itself introduced (e.g. its use by paper mills). doi.org/10.5281/zeno...

Why is it so hard to innovate in scholarly communication and publishing? Lots of reasons - the main one being how interconnected the sector is and how many different aspects one needs to consider to be successful. More discussion: doi.org/10.5281/zeno... #openscience #publishing #UKSGForum2024

Thank you to @uksg.bsky.social for inviting myself and my wonderful colleague to speak at the #UKSGForum2024 today (a first in person speaking event for us both) Thanks to @charlierapple.bsky.social who was an amazing Chair and @timjpleonard.bsky.social for his belief in us. Lota of talk about ChatGPT at #UKSGForum2024.

Good example of it not being a search engine. It is a maker up of prose that looks like it might be right based on what other people wrote. If people write correct things on the subject, it might give you a good answer. If they don't, it won't.

Lovely day at #UKSGForum2024 as always. Lots of chats with people I know, lots of chats with people I don't.

Really interesting thoughts from Sarah Pittaway about how libraries are thinking differently about physical spaces. Not "let's create a space for neuro diverse people" but "let's make all our spaces work for neurodiverse *and* neurotypical people". #UKSGForum2024

"Curiosity is the cornerstone of our profession." Great quote from Sarah Pittaway at #UKSGForum2024 talking about how librarians aren't just thinking about individual tools and whether / how to engage with them - but the bigger picture around that, the implications of societal trends e.g. AI.

BCU has a "grow your own"programme to get students into employment. The library is engaged with this and apprencticeship schemes to help further diversify its own workforce. "Not just getting people in, but getting them developed." Sarah Pittaway at #UKSGForum2024

"As a profession, in libraries, we are not diverse. We are overwhelmingly white. It's not good enough. We need to do something about it and we need to be accountable for that." Sarah Pittaway at #UKSGForum2024

Talking about needing people to ground you, can't all be folks running away with change and new ideas.

I used to say @katiefraser.bsky.social was my brake - she'd ask the sensible questions and point out when I was doing too much.

I do not currently have a brake 😂

Many ways into becoming a librarian. Sarah Pittaway cites brilliant colleagues with backgrounds ranging from architecture to hospitality, whose skills gained in those roles have made them brilliant in the library. #UKSGForum2024

Doing well in student surveys doesn't necessarily mean you are going to get rewarded. In a climate of scarce funding you might fund you miss out, as investment goes to poorer-performing parts of the institution. Challenging realities for libraries explained by Sarah Pittaway at #UKSGForum2024

Final keynote at #UKSGforum2024 by @drsarah.bsky.social is directly addressing the politics and economics of HE -- a much-needed part of the conversation.

'When you're trying to sell us the flashy new product or the exciting new subscription, the money might not be there anymore'

"Accidental librarian" Sarah Pittaway on some of the political challenges of our time: university funding - fewer international students, student fees stagnant and 'worth' 2/3 of what they were when set. Universities being expected to do more with less. #UKSGForum2024

Final keynote by @drsarah.bsky.social talking about the future of the profession.

Initial points that it's hard to think about the future when there is a lot going on right now - finances particularly.

UWTSD Birmingham library has a programme of peer-assisted learning - students helping other students with developing skills they will need at university and in employment. Fascinating examples from Tarandeep Johul at #UKSGForum2024

UWTSD Birmingham library also support students in employability skills - badges for digital literacy learning, including support for gaining Microsoft Office qualification. Fantastic to hear about this level of 'forward thinking' about what is most going to benefit students. #UKSGForum2024

That said UWTSD Birmingham library also supports students who literally don't know how to turn on a computer. Olivia Edmonds / Taran Johal at #UKSGForum2024

UWTSD Birmingham library entirely digital - really valued by student cohort which is all mature students, 30+, often still in full time work, many travelling from as far away as Bristol or Sheffield. So a decision that was taken for space reasons has been beneficial for strudents. #UKSGForum2024

Excellent talk from @drachiarelli.bsky.social

Interesting thoughts about where preprints are in terms of adoption curves - is it mostly early adopters?

I think at the Crick preprints are much more adopted than generally...comp sci & maths are obviously in late stages.
