A photograph of Cliff Edwards wearing a light suit, patterned bow tie and dark felt hat with upturned brim. He is leaning over a rustic fence, smiling at the camera and holding a Martin mahogany tenor ukulele as though playing it. The black and white photograph is, on closer inspection, composed entirely of the lyrics to "When You Wish Upon a Star".

I’m delighted to report that the record plays perfectly and sounds great. In common with the other tracks recorded at the session for the “Ukulele Ike Sings Again” LP, it sadly doesn't feature much in the way of ukulele, but I’m not going to be sniffy about a Cliff Edwards track that's entirely […]

As an eager Doctor Frankenstein once declared, "It's arrived!"

A couple of minor scuffs, but otherwise looks promising. Time to dust off the old phonographic apparatus and see how it sounds… 🤞

Depression made an unwelcome return chez Hancock recently, kicking off its shoes and generally making itself comfortable. Not entirely unexpected, I guess, as the ill health retirement process rumbles slowly on.

This morning saw a very welcome surprise […]

A smiling middle-aged man, wearing a checked jacket and a hat with an upturned brim, leans on what appears to be the mounted spare wheel of a car, which has the name Jiminy Cricket and a picture of that character on it.

This day in 1971, Cliff Edwards, also known as Ukulele Ike, died at the Virgil Convalescent Hospital in Hollywood, California, aged 76.

After huge successes on Broadway, in movies and music, the man who was the voice of Jiminy Cricket died penniless and […]

There's an "AI" Cliff Edwards performance on YouTube, which is a bit depressing. The fact that I recognise the person who uploaded it as a huge fan of Ukulele Ike is even more of a downer.

We have his recordings and movie appearances, there's no need for fakery on top of artistry.

Happy birthday to Cliff Edwards, "Ukulele Ike" himself, born on this day in 1895 in Hannibal, Missouri. Musician, singer, songwriter, actor, and the voice of Jiminy Cricket.

Although my Cliff Edwards Project is largely done for the moment, I'm still looking for rare recordings to transcribe and add to it. Unfortunately, what I usually find is this sort of thing, where the seller has added Cliff's name to the listing for no […]

Public Domain Spotlight: Singin’ in the Rain <p>One of the most enduring pieces of music from the 1920s has just now entered the public domain (<a href="https://web.law.duke.edu/cspd/publicdomainday/2025/">Duke Law</a>). Watch as Internet Archive’s Sean Dudley, a researcher specializing in the public domain, highlights the song’s iconic origins. Access the original sheet music from 1929 on <a href="https://archive.org/details/singin-in-the-rain-01/mode/2up">Archive</a>!</p> <iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="480" mozallowfullscreen="true" src="https://archive.org/embed/public-domain-spotlight-singin-in-the-rain" webkitallowfullscreen="true" width="640"></iframe> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Transcript</h2> <p>Hi, my name is Sean.</p> <p>I’m a researcher at the Internet Archive.</p> <p>One of my favorite pieces of music is Singin’ in the Rain.</p> <p>Of course, I know it best from the 1952 film, but it’s actually from a 1929 film that just entered public domain called The Hollywood Review.</p> <p>The songs featured a couple of times, being sung by Cliff Edwards, who would later go on to be Jiminy Cricket, and then later on by this giant chorus of stars who are from the silent era and the early talky era, all singing in raincoats in two-strip Technicolor, so some really early color in film.</p> <p>Now when we think about Singing of the Rain, we think about how many half-lives it’s already had under copyright.</p> <p>The 1952 film, it’s reuse later on in A Clockwork Orange, and so many countless other moments.</p> <p>So now that it’s in the public domain and it belongs to all of us, we can remix Singing in the Rain however we want.</p> <p>So we’ll be “Singin’ in the Rain!”</p> <p>See ya.</p>

Photograph of a hand holding three booklets, fanned out to show at least a portion of each cover. The booklets are titled "Ukulele Ike (Cliff Edwards) Collection for the Ukulele" and are numbered as 1, 2 and 3 in the series. They have similar covers with a portrait photo of Cliff Edwards and a picture of a ukulele against a diagonally pinstriped background, but each is a different colour (red, blue and green).
