My editorial cartoon for Honolulu Civil Beat today depicts new UH president Wendy Hensel with the head of her highly paid “advisor” Kim Siegenthaler growing out of Hensel’s left shoulder like some sort of cancerous growth. Hensel has brought Siegenthaler along to her last three postings, first in Georgia, then New York, and now Hawaii. Siegenthaler’s hiring and her position details are shrouded in mystery, as is any documentation surrounding the search procedures that identified Hensel and eventually led to her hiring. The UH board of regents are notoriously opaque and Hensel and Siegenthaler seem to fit that mold perfectly.

As a commission dedicated to advocating for the rights, safety, and well-being of LGBTQ+ individuals in Hawaii, we find it imperative to address the potential negative impacts of these policies on the UH Mãnoa community and call for a reaffirmation of the university's commitment to DEI. We are particularly concerned with the University of Hawaii at Mãnoa's removal of content from the LGBTQ+ Center's website. This stands in stark contrast to the community colleges in the UH system who have not removed their LGBTQ+ websites and resources.
