There are the pretty ones on my shoulders from self-harm, burned into my flesh with hot metal held in a flame. I was quite artistic back then. Years before, a witch's cat slashed my nose. She smirked. Bitch. Across my forehead is the life-saving scar from my brain aneurysm surgery. And across my wrists are attempts to take my own life from decades before. My hand carries a one-inch injury from scraping against a surprise screw in a boyfriend's board game store. The biggest cause of scarring on my body is the stretch marks. They make a map on my belly, hips, thighs... All the fat parts. I spent most of my adult life super obese, but in the last few years have lost nearly half that. I like my new geography. Better curves, too. If it means fitting into smaller, cheaper clothes, I'll take all the scars and stretch marks you've got.

Scars can tell triumphs too.
