These granite pegmatites can include metre-scale crystals and make statement wall cladding & counter tops. They’re texturally variable so precise provenance is difficult, but they’re from E Brazil, typically associated with the Aracuai orogen. They’re mined for gems & REEs too #urbangeology

A fossil belemnite with the phragmacone preserved in a paving slab. This is a dark brown, cigar shaped fossil with a cone-shaped, flared structure in which the individual chambers of the shell can be seen. It’s rare for this phragmacone to be preserved.

A nice walk this afternoon looking at urban and bedrock geology in Walthamstow with a team of TfL engineers. We started of with a bit of Jurassic pavement palaeontology #urbangeology

After running some solo errands in Potsdam I sat down to enjoy glass of wine in the evening sun… and spotted this wonderful Muschelkalk (German Trias) ooid limestone piece in (!) the pavement 🙂

The monument is carved from red sandstone in the Mughal architectural style. It is a pillar with lotus bud finial. The upper section is tetragonal with vertical blank cartouches. The lower section is a column with a central floral motif. There is a plinth of red sandstone and this rests on a very eroded plinth of (English) yellow sandstone.

The memorial of the lawyer Daboda Dewajee in Kensal Green Cemetery. It is carved from a block of red Bhander Sandstone, probably from the Dholpur region of Rajasthan. This sandstone from the Vindhyan Basin is a Global Heritage Stone and this is a remarkable use of it here in London #urbangeology

Public toilets at Maida Hill Market are clad in reclaimed and reused igneous plutonic rocks; red rapakivi granite from Finland and Norwegian larvikite. You can still see the plug marks on several blocks showing the quarrying technique. Cities need public loos! #urbangeology #reuse #reclaim #london

Here in the UK, the Faringdon Sponge Gravels (Aptian, Cretaceous) are used for making hoggin paths. They contain abundant fossils, often derived from older strata. Here a fossil Favosites coral peeps through the hoggin path in Gordon Square Gardens in Bloomsbury #urbangeology #london

A fabulous day for an #urbangeology walk yesterday. We started at my favourite piece of public sculpture, the panel on the plinth of The Monument, carved in the 1670s by Caius Gabriel Cibber in #PortlandStone. Thanks to everyone who came along!
