#JimmyCarter announced on #ThisDayInHistory in 1980 a US boycott of the Moscow #SummerOlympics because USSR supported the Afghan government. Meanwhile, Hitler shredded the #VersaillesTreaty & imposed the #NurembergLaws, and #FDR still sent us to the '36 Summer Olympics in Berlin.
#Anschluss refers to the annexation of #Austria by #NaziGermany on #ThisDayInHistory in 1938. Absorbing #Hitler's home country placed most speakers of the varied #GermanLanguages into the same country, and it was explicitly forbidden by the terms of the 1919 #VersaillesTreaty.
Germany was forbidden by the #VersaillesTreaty to have an air force. The government cheated for years, training pilots in the #SovietUnion. Then, on #ThisDayInHistory in 1935, the defiance became open when #AdolfHitler announced reformation of the #Luftwaffe and got away with it.
On June 28, 1919, the Treaty of Versailles officially ended World War I. But the harsh terms imposed on Germany sparked resentment and unrest—ultimately paving the way for World War II. Peace on paper, revenge in reality.
