This 1986 compilation of very whimsical tunes. ‘This doesn’t seem like your sort of thing,’ says Ollie, which is inaccurate if understandable. (I nicked it off an ex, actually.)

OMG. We're playing 'Headquarters' by The Monkees (part of the #vinylproject and THUS I have discovered this POP NUGGET.

There's nothing I love more than finally hearing where something comes from, whether it's a sample or just inspiration.

Peters and Lee. This is kind of by mistake. (It was unexpectedly in the sleeve of ABBA's Greatest Hits (1976).)

It's weird that this sort of thing used to be UBIQUITOUS. #LightEntertainment

So we don't have the sleeve (a tragedy) which should look like this:

I’d never heard (or even seen) this before. It’s from 1990 and Ol bought it ‘cos it’s got Spacemen 3 on. Fascinated by this sort of thing tbh. Gatefold sleeve with b&w band pics, lots of hair and leather jackets etc.

(@jimmygila.bsky.social you might find this amusing.)

A very stylish orange cover for Jump for Joy by Miss Peggy Lee, a vinyl record. It’s a reissue but I don’t know what year. The original was released in 1958.

The cover of the live album Royal Albert Hall October 10, 1997 by Spiritualized

The cover image is an aerial shot of South Kensington with the RAH circled and appearing like the ‘registered trademark’ symbol that’s part of the band’s name branding. The band’s name is embossed in holographic film. Fancy!

#vinylproject playing this at the moment, it’s just edged into first place as potentially the most valuable record we own.

We were at this gig, just two days before our first anniversary.

The cover of a vinyl LP - Psychedelic Unknowns - a reissued compilation. It is not very psychedelic.

The cover of a vinyl LP - Psychedelic Unknowns - a reissued compilation. It is not very psychedelic.

Back cover copy and track listing for the album.

Psychedelic Unknowns-20 obscure tracks recorded in the first age of psychedelia and brought together in 1979 on 2 limited edition E.P.'s released only in the USA. Now they are together on this L.P. and released in England where there seems to be a Psychedelic Revival!?!
As you browse across the tracks I hope you will not be put off simply because the names are unfamiliar. This record is not intended as a "Greatest Hits"" What you will find is a collection of 20 "Mind Blowing Experiences" gathered from every part of the USA where they were just "Gathering Dust" When the tracks were originally released on local independant labels, sales were probably less than 1,000 copies. Now 15 years later "Calico Records" are hoping that the music will generate much larger sales - not for the money-but that we may be able to finance further excursions in the world of Psychedelia. At the moment the answer to that is... UNKNOWN.

#vinylproject Now playing - Psychedelic Unknowns- a compilation of sixties ‘rarities’ from 1979 - bit of a let down on the design front I feel.

This is quite good. Ol’s other psychedelic comp is v. mainstream. I’ve got one as well, which is very English, i.e faintly music hall.

The cover of the 1985 album Phantasmagoria by The Damned. Susie B, in a hooded cloak, with a heavy fringe (on her head, not on the cloak) is looking gothic in Kensal Green Cemetery. There’s a sticker on the cover to demonstrate that I paid £2.50 for this in about 1988

Continuing the #VinylProject and Today I Learned that the woman on the cover of Phantasmagoria is Susie Bick, the future Mrs Nick Cave.

We're listening to Surf's Up. #VinylProject

My dad played me this through headphones to demonstrate 'stereo' when I was ... I dunno. Three? The album is EXACTLY the sound of my parents being 'up' after I'd gone to bed, probably before my brother was born in 1975.

‘I wonder who won the Saab,’ says Ollie. He looked it up. Sometimes the internet is still amazing.

Too many strings, is my view.

Ollie's view: 'there's like four really good songs, could have been an EP, mate.'

Listening to 'A Talent to Amuse' by Noel Coward as part of the #VinylProject. (Where did it come from? HMV, apparently, but who bought it? No idea.) Ollie has made it through Poor Little Rich Girl, A Room With a View and Mad Dogs and Englishmen but has now decamped to the kitchen to make dinner.

In 1990 I moved to Brighton and lived with some lesbians. I didn’t care one way or the other about Billy Bragg when I went but when I came back I was borderline obsessed with him.

As part of the #vinylproject we’re currently listening to my ‘mid-price 1980s reissue’ of this, which is certainly a foundational record in this house. We have also listened to The Monkees, The Stones, Aiden Moffat and The Fall this evening.

We’re listening to Revolver, another Beatles album that it appears I have never actually heard. We don’t know where this came from but evidently it used to belong to someone called Helen cos she wrote her name on the back.

#vinylproject We‘ve finished the singles and moved on to LPs. Now playing Abbey Road. My boss gave me her records when she retired in 1999. This is one of hers. Amazingly I don’t think I‘ve ever listened to this. (My parents had no interest in The Beatles.)

This is what my bedroom sounded like c. OnThisDay in 1988. Famously (well, @matwinser.bsky.social is aware of this and maybe @jimmygila.bsky.social) I taped 'Valentine' over & over & over on a C90 and listened to it repeatedly.
