It is characterized by its distinctive plumage, with a brown-red body, black wings, and a violet-blue patch on its cheeks. It's short, broad-based, sharp-pointed beak is pink and waxy-looking, and it's pink-ringed eyes are red. These birds are often found in small flocks and inhabit grasslands, open woodlands, and savannahs. Violet-eared waxbills primarily feed on seeds and insects.
