The pic: The Executioner and Her Way of Life Volume 9's English cover My inane 2:30am ramblings: Virgin Road has such a great vibe to it. This might seem like a random connection, but the mood it puts me into is the same one as my favorite Dark Tower book: The Wastelands. You have this two-of-a-kind anti-hero journeying through a dying world shaped by a cataclysm that feels more entropic than apocalyptic (and tbf, Virgin Road _did_ have an apocalypse 1,000 years ago, but the contemporaneous setting is absolutely entropy), with pockets of civilization, keeping company with a small band of misfits. There's an edge of the world with lovecraftian horrors. There's a town at the end of the line (Holy Land/Lud), that requires a very special train to get across to the next unreachable destination; and the hero destroys the town in the process of taking said train. Our band of misfits has a person from another world (Akari/Jake), whom our anti-hero has reason to keep emotional distance from, yet bonds with anyway only to lose them. Losing them begins a supernatural process that makes them slowly go mad (Menou from using the pure concept itself, Roland from being split between timelines). It also includes a person who is a twisted part of themselves (Maya/Susannah) that must get reconciled with the sane half of themselves. It also includes a sarcastic lazy person who isn't on board with any of it (Sahara/Eddie), but ends up bonding with the above person and becoming a fully-on-board member of the group. The writing style can sometimes be similar, even. The way Mato Sato likes to repeat elucidating the state of the world reminds me of Roland repeating how "the world has moved on" over and over (which virgin road's world totally has). Not remotely suggesting that Virgin Road might be inspired by the Dark Tower at all, but the setting and everything just gives me the same vibe and after thinking about it, I'm realizing there are more throughlines than I'd thought.
This might sound weird, but #virginroad gives me the same vibe as The Dark Tower. They both have these worlds that are sort of more entropic than apocalyptic, with some surprisingly similar characters, relationships and settings once you think about it. Inane rambling in alt-text.
