"Maybe the enemy is the fucking war..."
The troubled son of #TheBestYearsOfOurLives (1946) is one of those quietly brilliant films that lingers in your mind as a mood rather than for specific elements. Powerful, sensitive, well worth your time. Plus, an absolute belting soundtrack.

"What a creature must sit on the throne, who lets a man like you deal out his justice."
Rebelling, flogging, branding, flirting, firing, duelling, sinking, exploding: part one of my unofficial Curtiz/Flynn swashbuckling trilogy is a rough diamond I love and it never disappoints.

I'm really looking forward to watching #CaptainBlood (1935) with @curiodik1dik2.bsky.social for #WFWWW tonight.

"We will ask mercy from the Great Heart..."
Its technical prowess and historical significance don't come within a billion miles of negating its vile, racist, bigoted, pernicious and cruel content. As groundbreaking as it is sickening, it's the most abhorrent movie I'll ever see.

"You may need this..."
There's one simple thing that keeps this from achieving greatness and that's the editing. It doesn't need to be 158 minutes; it could be a 2-hour movie if certain scenes, sequences and setpieces were trimmed to make it more taut.

This is the calibre of shot you get when the director of your movie is an ex-fighter pilot and your leading man has done 98 hours' flying time in preparation.

"D'you know what you can do when you see a shooting star?"
Easily one of the greatest movies ever made with my eternal respect going to the camera crew and incredible aerial stunt team. It deserved its Oscar triumph and is still fresh at 98 years old.
