Through a mouth suddenly dry, Da’al muttered, “The situations arenae the same.” “Just shut up. You don’t get a vote on this one.”

A press of cool, hard glass against Pip’s lips, insistent. Bittersweet drops, like tea and honey, flowed coolly over his tongue. Spiciness underlaid the grassy flavor, like walnuts and red pepper, strange but familiar…. That’s nae water. Pip stopped fighting the liquid in his mouth and began to swallow, slowly. A tingle spread as sips trickled into his throat. A warming buzz diffused down his abused esophagus, then radiated out as his body picked it up from within. He’d know the taste of one of Norui’s healing potions anywhere. As the last drips disappeared down his gullet, Pip forced open one eye.

A small panic lit up under the heavy blanket of fatigue. Hell. Am I dyin’? Pip'd had one near-death experience already this week. In a cave of ice. A bunch of Zorroceans. Close quarters— that’s where Pip belonged, right up in the enemy’s face, as always. His fists couldn’t break through the chunks of rock adhered to their skin, but as long as he kept them occupied, they were exposed to Honjo’s blade or Zilla’s arrows or Norui’s spells or Sungie’s knives. They’d flanked him. He’d been gliding through the usual motions of combat, gleeful adrenaline pumping through him, slipping and sliding around the edges of their axes. He’d gotten a hand on one’s beard and yanked, and the fit of rage on the Zorroc’s face had broken a chuckle from him. Pip didn’t even see the swinging axe until it had bit into his side, splitting him open nearly through to the middle.
