I don't know what it was about 2024 but for me it was the year of the scary mushroom. I love having a nonbinary mc and how normal it feels. Fall of the House of Usher is one of my favorite Poe works, and I have a high bar for adaptations for it after falling in love with Mike Flanagan's Netflix series. What moves the dead does a great job of conveying gothic moodiness, body horror. I think it also does a great job of implementing Easton's PTSD into the situation they face. Short, horrific, and fun, once you can get past the slower setup you're in for a good time. 4/5

This is the only review I’ve written after seeing other people’s interpretation of a book and I think some folks are just kind of missing the point? The main themes of this book are addiction, loss, and manipulation. The protagonist and secondary characters morals are intentionally superficial. I don’t think they’re meant to be “likable.” This story gives its characters and readers false hope throughout and it’s crushing. Are there a few plot beats that get dropped? For sure. But it’s also got nasty mushrooms and ghosts so. Ya know, not too bad. 3/5

Read my first T. Kingfisher book this year, Thornhedge. I have a few of their other books, and I'll probably go through their back catalogue soon. What Moves The Dead, a retelling of Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher, has me particularly intrigued.
