Thom was criminally underused in the books and this is a way to give him more to do. Asmodean being freed earlier than others could make sense. He would never awaken others and would do his own thing. He could have been awake for decades.

It was a great idea to remove Mat from Rhuidean/this plot line. I thought so even before S3 started and this only re-enforced it. Mat's inclusion weakened and heavily muddled the book sequences; this was such an improvment
