The same bobcat has stopped to look behind for a moment, giving staff a look at its face. It looks a little like a large housecat with a short tail, but you don't want to give this cat a hug.

Local wildcat species are even more shy than the coyotes, unless they're the school's mascot. ;) Staff were lucky enough to spot this beautiful bobcat passing through the campus one quiet afternoon a few years back! #WildlifeWednesdays #NRM #TrainMuseum #bobcats #PNW #animals #cats

A distant photo of two coyotes running along Stone Quarry Road across the Snoqualmie Valley Railroad tracks. According to staff, they returned to the road and got frightened off by incoming cars at least three times that morning.

While rarely photographed, coyotes are a common sight on the train tracks in the morning at the Railway History Campus. They're shy and quick to scamper off into the woods, but this pair really wanted to walk on the street!

A northwestern garter snake flattened against the ground in an attempt to look bigger. It is black with a distinct yellow stripe down its back and light green stripes down each side. It looks very intense and almost angry. Its tongue is out, black tipped and pink towards the mouth.

The same northwestern garter snake curled up in a defensive pose because flattening itself to look bigger did not scare the photographer off. It is black with a distinct yellow stripe down its back and light green stripes down each side. It looks very intense.

The same northwestern garter snake, now scooped up in the photographer's hand. It is black with a distinct yellow stripe down its back and light green stripes down each side. It isn't particularly happy to be scooped, but this was a cold November morning so it was not very fast and didn't mind the warmth provided by the hand.

A very common sight around the Railway History Campus are garter snakes. They love to warm themselves on the sidewalks. Good news for gardeners: these harmless reptiles eat mostly slugs and insects, but larger individuals can eat mice too! #WildlifeWednesdays #snakes #NRM #TrainMuseum #PNW #animals

A zoomed in photo of the bear, taken from just around the corner of the Railway Education Center at ground level. He is alert and watching the person with the camera, but has made no move to stand up. The photographer is a good distance away and had a door at the ready to close in case the bear did stand up.

The bears have startled Museum staff too. Check out this fat bear week contender from 2018!
It's always important to be bear aware, especially in areas like Snoqualmie & North Bend. We are on the edge of a national forest, after all!

A southern green stinkbug perched on the photographer's thumb. It is a lovely shade of green with a light orange band that runs the entire perimeter of the insect. This is an agricultural pest that is invasive in Washington State much like the brown marmorated stinkbug everyone is more familiar with.

So many stinkbugs and cedar bits in this poor photographer's hair... An unexpected but darn good reason to wear a hat around steam.
Turns out these things come in other colors, but this species is also invasive!

A mother black bear with two cubs, heading away from the train tracks into the brush. In the background, Snoqualmie Valley Railroad 4012 approaches, headlight bright and horn blaring. The photo is a bit fuzzy from being so zoomed in, but the photographer was keeping an understandably safe distance away.

The same three black bears, now on the other side of the greenery, crossing Stone Quarry Road into much safer forest area.

Large predators like to use roads, including railroads, as easy pathways. It's convenient and might feel safe... Right up until a car or train comes along! We gave this black bear family a real fright a couple years back! #WildlifeWednesdays #NRM #TrainMuseum #bears #PNW #animals

Future #WildlifeWednesdays posts from the Museum may contain a variety of visiting reptiles, amphibians, birds, mammals, and even some invertebrates. All will be tagged, of course, but if you are averse to seeing particular creatures, you may wish to use Bluesky's built-in filtering features.

The local elk herd stands on the train tracks just past the Northwest Railway Museum's Conservation & Restoration Workshop. The main cluster of them are all turned to face the camera, looking almost eerie. The track is covered in a blanket of snow.

The railway changed everything and has lasting effects that continue to this day. Wildlife is included under the umbrella of everything so how about a new #NRM tag theme for the critters that visit the Museum and its grounds?

A young male deer among the tall grass at Cades Cove in the Smoky Mountains. It's not as grand as Yellowstone or Denali, but Cades Cove usually delivers for wildlife viewing. #WildlifeWednesdays #Wildlife #Parks #photography #nature

Pretty sure this is a juvenile Great Frigate, but I'll come back and comment if he isn't! On Genovesa in #Galápagos, at golden hour.

Many people release pet rabbits into the park - bad for the park, bad for the bunny. Take it to a shelter. Also, pets do not make good Xmas gifts.
