Interestingly, the newly promoted Union General #WilliamSherman (of Sherman’s March) was scheduled to travel with #MarkTwain, but had to drop out to go on a diplomatic mission to Mexico, to President Benito Juarez on military matters, after the French withdrawal and the fall of Emperor Maximilian.
