Not because he was afraid of what the witches would do to him if they discovered he was human, but because he wasn't keen on the idea of ​​them staring at him curiously or trying to pull his ears to check if they really were round. A little Headcanon: neither Luz nor Philip could recreate the Portal because Caleb took a crucial ingredient for its operation to his grave.
