CofE bishops are again saying they’ll commission some work to seek improvements to how the #WomenBishops settlement works.

Is it time, as one senior church leaders has suggested, for the @churchofengland.org to appoint only women as bishops for a period - perhaps 5 years? - so as to move the CofE forward, catch it up & achieve at least some degree of gender balance?

I’m puzzled as to why those who criticise @watch-notequalyet.bsky.social for seeking a #GeneralSynod review of the @churchofengland.org’s #womenbishops Settlement avoid addressing the lack of compliance & abuses that have made it fail, & the loss of confidence that bishops will put things right.
1. On the lack of monitoring of the #WomenBishops Settlement
Since 2014, @watch-notequalyet.bsky.social & individuals have pointed out that @churchofengland.org leaders haven’t set up any monitoring of whether the terms of the Settlement are being followed by clergy & churches.

14 So I hope the House of Bishops will not succeed in heading off a national debate on
- how the 2014 Settlement on #WomenBishops has malfunctioned & failed,
&
- whether it is time to consider bringing it to a generous end.

11 There’s been no national monitoring of what’s been going on, & concerns raised have been batted off.
If the bishops can head off WATCH’s motion from getting to #GeneralSynod, then they’ll be able to block any debate on the way the #womenbishops Settlement has been abused, & how it has failed.
7 But since 2014 the terms of the #womenbishops Settlement are reported to have been flouted by the opposers. Then there’s been what can only be called underhand behaviour on the part of the clergy who usually hide from their congregations their practice of ‘quietly’ excluding women from leadership
Interesting that the IR’s report came out on 11.4.24, & only now - lo & behold - just after the @watch-notequalyet.bsky.social call for an end to the 2014 #womenbishops settlement, they pop up saying
“Don’t worry, we’ll do…something.”
But there’s nothing substantive there.
More of the same won’t do.
In a rational world, those not complying with the terms of the @churchofengland.org 2014 Settlement on #WomenBishops might be expected to say that they’re sorry, will put things right & comply with what was agreed then, so as to make #extendedepiscopaloversight work.
