It’s INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY
While the world is handing out flowers, we are sharing an audit -
The Bishops - decide about your body
The Broligarchs - tell you what you can say online
The Proxies - decide which of your rights are negotiable

Rosine Izabayo of IMRO Rwanda
Rosine Izabayo of IMRO Rwanda highlights that, despite the many successes that Rwanda has had against HIV/AIDS, teen mothers continue to have major challenges. About 5% of Rwandan teenagers are pregnant or have been. They face social stigma and exclusion as well as HIV stigma. #WomenKnow #IAS2025
Barbara is a single mother running a small community org with 2 staff, she has no income and needs to walk up to 20km to support clients. She's surviving by selling apples on the streets of Kampala. She was in tears describing the way that funding cuts have impacted her country. #IAS2025 #WomenKnow
I can't do justice to what just happened, but we just heard a heartbreaking tale from Barbara, an Ugandan woman in the audience, about the impact of aid cuts on the work she does. #WomenKnow
"I know you're asking yourself, how is that different from other women? You are right. We live in a patriarchal system that puts all women into that bucket." Erika Castellanos to huge applause #WomenKnow #IAS2025
Erika Castellanos speaking at IAS2025
Next up at #WomenKnow is the incredible HIV-positive #trans activist Erika Castellanos.
What works for women?
"We need to make sure that now is the time for bravery. We demand that women and girls are at the centre of response, meaningfully and also greatly involved." Powerful words from Charity Mkona. #WomenKnow
FRAMING THIS MOMENT: + → More than 53% of people living with HIV are women → Prior to the crisis women living with HIV were 8 times more likely to die during childbirth and postpartum. → A survey of cuts to HIV programmes in 44 LMICs in early 2025 revealed widespread service disruptions • one in five women unable to obtain medication • nearly one in three pregnant women faced severe barriers to maternal care • many expressing increased vulnerability to violence → HIV funding cuts disproportionately impact women living w/ HIV, trans women, sex workers, & women who use drugs. '→ In March 2025 alone, nearly 15% of women in community HIV roles, including peer educators, community health workers, and advocates, lost their jobs. → Shrinking civic space further limits women's participation and leadership.
The global health funding crisis is not gender-neutral. Slide from Charity Mkona #WomenKnow
"How do we frame this moment? The crisis is over. This is not a time for crisis. We are redefining opportunities now. This is time for us to take an action. And as women, already, we have strategised. We are moving forward." Charity Mkona #WomenKnow
A really stirring call to action from @susancolehaley.bsky.social to kick off the #WomenKnow session. Next up is Charity M'kona on 'Science and Sisterhood'.
"Listen to us, believe us, protect us, take action to support us. … recognise we don't lead single issue lives." Cole calls for women-led networks and programs to capitalise on the knowledge and experience that women already have and can contribute. #WomenKnow
A key cause of HIV gender inequity is the impact of criminalisation, including criminalisation of drug use and sex work, disproportionately affecting women with HIV. #WomenKnow
Susan Cole begins the session by calling out the drop-off in global funding. This will disproportionately affect women living with and at risk of HIV. Research fails to properly consider the needs of women. Female migrants in particular face significant challenges. #WomenKNow
Women Know What Works logo
Hi from Kigali, Rwanda. I'm at #IAS2025 and in my first pre-conference session, Women Know What Works, organised to celebrate and highlight the incredible contribution of women to the HIV response. #WomenKnow
Thank you,... We all hate to say we told you so,... But remember how your mama used to tell you about a woman's intuition (even if she's not smart, educated and in possession of some critical thinking skills)

I was doing a science presentation in French tonight and someone told me I'm much more assertive in French than I am in English.
I said it's because I've never learned the word sorry.

Did fElon leave his kid behind AGAIN?
Wait, where's whichever mother?
Kid is too short and distant to be serving useful purpose as human shield.
That's straight up ordered subordination. #WomenKnow
If you had any doubt before, now you know Elon is Pres.
