What is your favorite thing about the industry? My favorite thing would be that every project is different, so I’m always learning something new. No two jobsites are the same. No two project teams are the same. Build relationships, explore the many roles and disciplines, visit offices and project sites, join a construction association, and ask a lot of questions. What drew you to the construction industry? I began my career in the construction industry because of my dad. When I was a kid, he would take us to his jobsites during construction and then after to see the finished projects. It was fascinating to see how things were built and to learn the amount of people that are needed from a concept stage to final delivery. I started in the heavy highway and water divisions. Within a few years, an opportunity opened up in healthcare construction. What would you say is a great first step for women looking into the construction field? First step, do not be afraid or intimidated. There are many avenues for women, from the trades and being in the field, to management of projects. Connecting to women established in the area of interest is a great way to learn what opportunities are out there. Also, be open to exploring. There are local classes available for drywall framing and repair, concrete, electrical work, and so much more.
