monochrome woodcut print, pencil signed, dated, titled and numbered (#45 of 250); approximate measurements: image 8.75” W x 9.0” H paper 13-3/8 x 12-1/2 in.

[black/white illustration of very rotund creature covered in spines and with long thin black snout; almost certainly a Short-beaked Echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus) from Australasia, probably modeled after an animal seen at the zoo]

“Native Porcupine" [ #Echidna ], 1974
Woodcut print, 8.75 x 9.0”
ℹ️ He often sketched zoo animals in NYC, especially @ Bronx Zoo - found out they had echidnas in the 1950s when he was there, so they were likely the models for this!

It's #WorldEchidnaDay so here's a drawing by Joseph Wolf (1820-1899) of this extraordinary egg laying mammal. It was published by Richard Owen in the Philosophical Transactions (Pl.39, 1865). If you look closely, you can see a young baby in the pouch and a small outline sketch of it! buff.ly/8ErERyK

Happy #WorldEchidnaDay to the world's second best animal (nothing beats a #platypus). #Echidnas are spiny, digging anteaters, & if threatened, sink vertically into the soil by doing jazz-hands with all four feet. My book #PlatypusMatters tells their story, & how the world came to know them. #echidna

It’s #WorldEchidnaDay and who wouldn’t want to celebrate this little monotreme?

Monotremes are the world’s only egg-laying mammals, making these spiky ones members of a small club with only the platypus.
