always feel very fortunate to see the Swallowtail (Papilio machaon britannicus) such an iconic species but under threat from rising sea levels and flooding of its habitat.

A black butterfly in a mesh met cage. White spots run down its body from head to posterior abdomen. Broken up white borders line the ventral hindwing and forewing. On the hindwing, from the border inwards is a row of orange spots, then metallic blue and green splotches, and then another row of orange spots.
A yellow swallowtail butterfly in a mesh cage. A broad black line runs down the thorax and abdomen. Four large black spike-like stripes are present on the dorsal forewing. On the border of the forewing and hindwing is a very very broad black border; within is a row of yellow and orange spots followed inward by broad dark blue blotches.
A yellow swallowtail butterfly on a plant with small pink flowers. The butterfly appears similar to the prior butterfly, only the most inward black stripe on the wings extends all the way down the hindwings. The butterfly also appears to have multiple pairs of wing “tails” instead of just one pair.
A black butterfly on a leaf within somewhat dense foliage. It is mostly monocolor; the exceptions are six small pink spots on the head (on the dorsal side, not laterally). On the hindwings seven pairs of much larger pink spots are visible; other spots are obscured by the pure black forewings.
Yay, #WorldSwallowtailDay! My absolute favorite family of butterflies (and insects in general), I still haven’t seen any this year sadly but I’d like to post some old photos of some swallowtails 🦋
