This is very clear and applies to #Citizens of all nations whether or not they have a #WrittenConstitution
#WrittenConstitution
Imagine writing a modern constitution and adding:
“Top job goes to whoever is born into the right family. No application. No interview. No vote.”
You’d laugh it out of the room. That’s monarchy

I don't doubt much of Labour is progressive, many of its MPs even, but the government is not.
Such progressive measures as it proposes lie within such tight constraints that, in a time for bold actions, they are utterly insignificant.

You cannot protect the public from the most profound risks to civil liberties from central government identity registration without a strong #WrittenConstitution consciously designed with such protections in mind, and the UK political classes aren't even discussing delivering that basic requirement.
Time to join the 21st century and get rid of this drain on the public purse!

The only people who don't see this are whoever's in Government & the donors that fund them.

As I frequently (some say "endlessly") promote... #WrittenConstitution.
Whatever means of selection we use, it's well overdue that the Head of State has the power of a modern democracy.
And for that to be democratically legitimate requires some form of validation by the electorate.
All part of the progressive #WrittenConstitution we so desperately need.
True under any circumstances, but even moreso where the rights are enshrined in British law under the weak mechanism of ordinary, easily repealed, law.
We must strengthen our rights as part of a #WrittenConstitution.
I argue for a #WrittenConstitution and #ProportionalRepresentation, for #Leveson2 too among other measures like enforced political transparency, strict lobby controls and state party funding.
That direction needs to be firmly established, but not all need to be finalised before we #RejoinEU.
It would he a good thing if implemented in an environment where civil rights are robustly protected.
In the UK they are not. Ordinary law is too easily repealed, our protection must be in a #WrittenConstitution.
That's *exactly* why our constitution fails. Nothing has any more force than regular law that can be repealed with relative ease.
We desperately need a #WrittenConstitution that embodies our citizens rights (among other things), is enforceable & only amendable by direct reference to the electorate.
While we lack a #WrittenConstitution that protects our civil liberties such barriers are all we have preventing easy retrieval and collation of data as a tool of oppression by a future potential authoritarian government... that may very well be our next government.
A pro-authoritarian measure unless we get an enforceable #WrittenConstitution with robust protection of citizens' rights first.
I can't fathom the support for this completely mad scheme when the country is at the greatest risk of such an authoritarian regime in almost a century.
Which immediately requires a #WrittenConstitution with a Head of State whose duty is to hold the Executive to account in relation to it, having enforcement powers etc.
Until we have all of that in place a mandatory national ID card is an open invitation to a future authoritarian government.
The only route to closing down every work-around is ever more authoritarian invasion of privacy unless there are rigorous citizens protections that can't be undone by a simple vote in parliament.
Yet another reason we need a #WrittenConstitution and a Head of State who can enforce it.
Spot on @georgemonbiot.bsky.social and relevant to the often raised Identity Card notion too.
I believe the solution to be a rigorous enforceable #WrittenConstitution that citizens could invoke against such authoritarian measures.

All my life I was brought up to be proud of our Parliament and Democracy. Runnymede 1215 etc etc.
To learn the reality of it is disappointing to say the least.

Everything he says shouts that he's an outstanding remedy to the years of incompetence & corruption, but listening hard only confirms that he lacks progressive vision.
