The bone relics were temporarily placed at Taipei's Shandao Temple and Miaoli's Kaishan Temple before the 1965 completion of #Xuanzang (Syuentzang) Temple next to Sun Moon Lake. The original plans called for the #temple to be built on an isle at the lake center that is sacred to the Indigenous Thao.

#TaiwanArchives: In 1955, #Taipei welcomed the arrival of the bone relics of #Xuanzang (玄奘), a Tang dynasty monk who traveled to India to procure 657 Buddhist scriptures. His 17-year pilgrimage was immortalized in the Chinese classic "Journey to the West (西遊記)." The Śarīra, however, came from Japan.
