Matsushima arrived at #Sasebo Naval Arsenal in October 1892. All three sisters took part in the First Sino-Japanese War 1894-5. While serving as flagship to Admiral Itō #Sukeyuki 伊東 祐亨 at the battle of the #YaluRiver, Matsushima took heavy damage and required a short yard period at #Kure. 4/7

Retired by 1892 and then recalled three years later at the outbreak of the #FirstSino-JapaneseWar, he was present at the battles of the #YaluRiver and #Weihaiwei. Following the end of the conflict, Kobayama was promoted to Admiral and made the first Governor-General of #Taiwan. 3/4
