For day 12 of #12DaysOfXmas with #YorkshireCelebrities as #peatland wildlife, it's Leeds Olympian Nicola Adams as Sphagnum squarrosum.

This sphagnum will tolerate higher calcium & nutrient levels than many species & is found on flushes in the uplands, & in fens & wet woodlands in the lowlands.

For day 11 of #12DaysOfXmas with #YorkshireCelebrities as #peatland wildlife, it's Bradford's (and Countryfile's) Anita Rani as devil's matchsticks (Cladonia floerkeana).

This colourful lichen prefers acidic conditions and is failry widespread on the drier parts of our peatlands.

For day 10 of #12DaysOfXmas with #YorkshireCelebrities as #peatland wildlife, we have Bradfordian and TNA X Division Champion, Leon Slater, as ling (Calluna vulgaris).

Ling is one of 3 species of heather we find on our peatlands; its shoots are an important food source for grouse.

For day 9 of #12DaysOfXmas with #YorkshireCelebrities as #peatland wildlife, we have Gaby Logan (Leeds) as a golden plover (Pluvialis apricaria).

This elegant wader visits our uplands each summer to breed.. It has a mournful one note call that rings out over the fells for seemingly hours.

For day 6 of #12DaysOfXmas with #YorkshireCelebrities as #peatland wildlife, we have Dewsbury Olympians, Alistair and Johnny Brownlee as white-beak sedge (Rhynchospora alba).

This plant was thought to be extinct in Yorkshire but we found some high up in the Dales.

For day 5 of #12DaysOfXmas with #YorkshireCelebrities as #peatland wildlife, Bradford's Kimberley Walsh is serving bryophytic realness with Sphagnum austinii. This was the dominant peat-forming sphagnum in Yorkshire before pollution wiped it out in the industrial revolution. Time for a comeback?

For day 4 of #12DaysOfXmas with #YorkshireCelebrities as #peatland wildlife, please enjoy Ed Sheeran (Halifax) as Polytrichum spp. tbc, this is Polytrichum spp. that's been on fire - it's normally bright green. You'll often find this growing on drier parts of the bog.

For day 3 of #12DaysOfXmas with #YorkshireCelebrities as #peatland wildlife, we have Sheffield's Sean Bean as a shield bug. It's actually probably a forest shield bug (Pentatoma rufipes) but it was photographed on a peatland track. One does not simply restore a peat bog.

For day 2 of #12DaysOfXmas with #YorkshireCelebrities as #peatland wildlife, we have Dame Judi Dench (Heworth) as round-leaved sundew (Drosera rotundifolia), which supplements the meagre nutrients in peat with insects it catches in its sticky fronds.
