#YoungScientistNetworking addresses this... Do we need to keep this going?
Hey, #chemsky is there still an interest in #YoungScientistNetworking ?
This is absolutely the best advice ever given. No Snark.
#YoungScientistNetworking
You can, even if you've never done it before.
I'm also happy to help.
And there is #YoungScientistNetworking
#YoungScientistNetworking covered this...extensively
Dude that is what #YoungScientistNetworking is literally ALL about! There are so many chemistry adjacent careers. Don't think you're stuck.
Did you catch Week 2 of #YoungScientistNetworking? You didn't? You missed @pauldauenhauer.bsky.social @punkrockscience.bsky.social @jenlove.bsky.social and an EPIC thread from @merz.bsky.social. Go read these! #chemsky #biosky Funnny fact, Alex Merz knew my brother in college!
Finishing up #YoungScientistNetworking with an epic! Buckle in!

Our next #YoungScientistNetworking. O Canada!
Hello, Iβm participating in the #YoungScientistNetworking to share my career path. I am a first generation undergraduate, and come from a financially disadvantaged background. I am a cis, straight, white woman. So, despite financial adversity, I certainly had privilege.

Today's #YoungScientistNetworking
#chemsky you catching these?
For #YoungScientistNetworking, today Iβm talking a bit about my career path - and Iβll tell you up front itβs a weird one. I donβt do anything like what I thought Iβd do when I started this, and I might do something wholly different in six months. On purpose.
...the University of Minnesota, which is close to my home and a great program. I've been at the U of Minnesota since 2014. In 2019, my research shifted from a focus on bio-derived chemicals to an entirely new direction on programmable catalysis (www.cpec.umn.edu)

...developing a high speed cellulose reactor to understand the catalysis of activating cellulose bonds. I had a secondary project on synthesizing commodity chemicals from sugars. After four years at UMass, I received a phone call to consider moving back to...

in 2008. This was the year of the financial crash and Dow nearly went bankrupt (for a variety of reasons). I was approached about applying for a faculty job at UMass Amherst, which I interviewed for and started in 2009. My first five years were entirely focused on...

at Madison, so I had to stay close and ended up enjoying the visit to the U of Minnesota, where I did my PhD on heterogeneous catalysis. At this point, I really didn't know what to do next, and I had an offer to work at Dow Chemical Company in Midlan, MI...
#YoungScientistNetworking (3/6)
Nobody in my family was a chemist or engineer, and none had gone to graduate school. I conducted research in Professor Nick Abbott's lab during the semester, and this attracted me to graduate school. My wife was studying to be a veterinarian...

As part of #YoungScientistNetworking, I'm sharing my career path starting from undergrad at the Univ. of Wisconsin Madison. I was studying Chemistry & Chemical Engineering, and I didn't know what I wanted to do for a career; I had only selected CHEN bc I enjoyed it (1/6)

Batting Cleanup in the first week of #YoungScientistNetworking
While my career path may appear to be a "random walk" rather than a defined flow chart, I found EXACTLY where I'm meant to be! My advice to you is to network, ask questions, try new things & volunteer. Find your life's purpose, and it may or may not be career-related!
#YoungScientistNetworking
We now have 12 hubs across the US and have held our Scientific Speed Networking events in 7 of them. I have connected many tens of thousands of scientists, helping them find jobs, do business deals, and further science. (3 upcoming events biotechnetworks.org/events ) β¦

I founded Biotech Networks in San Diego, focusing locally & working in marketing at companies and as a consultant. During the pandemic, like a lot of people I examined my life and decided I wanted to expand across the US. I relied on my marketing & computer skills...

AHA#4: In 2008 I helped organize a drug discovery conference as part of my job at a startup, and met @quantumtessera.bsky.social ! As I watched the scientists interacting and furthering their work, I realized that this is my life's purpose, to connect scientists. ....

. Prior to that, I associated marketing with advertising and sales. But marketing is much more than that, it's the process of creating the best products and services for customers. I was so excited to have found a discipline that fit my interests & helped advance science.
