“Viktor!” The word came pressed through the hissing water. “Stop.”
“Huh?” Viktor paused. “Did I hurt you?”
Yuuri shook his head. “It’s just…” Tears spilled from his eyes—very much to Viktor’s horror.
“Yuuri…” He drew his husband into his arms. What’s going on? “The final competition of the career is difficult even for skaters with nerves of steel. But you will pull through this, I believe in you.”
Yuuri dug his fingers into Viktor’s shoulders. “It’s not about that, Viktor!”
“What is it about, then?” Viktor asked, trying to ignore the pain that Yuuri’s fingernails induced. “Talk to me, Yuuri.”
But Yuuri only sobbed harder. “Tell me I will still be enough when I have retired!”
They had talked about Yuuri’s retirement and the time afterwards many a time this season. In none of these conversations, this particular fear of Yuuri had ever come up. Viktor had thought he had long been over it. “This is just the nerves. Retirement is a big step. Yuuri, you will always be enough.”
“Are you sure about that, Viktor? When I no longer compete, will my skating still satisfy you? When I no longer crush your records, will you still desire me? We both know that’s where my eros comes from. I’m not like you.”
