After negotiations for a ghost marriage have been completed, compromise reached, on the day of the wedding, Zenitsu wakes up early and immediately starts making a big, bridezilla fuss to get ready, wanting everything to be perfect. Tanjirou leaves the house to get some space & air and is surprised to find at the edge of the property a swordsman standing there in a Corps uniform, arms crossed, observing the sunrise as if it isn't good enough. He recognizes him from the portrait they had to get done: it's Kaigaku. This is the first time Tanjirou has seen him manifested when he isn't in his gore-splattered, decapitated demon form intent on raining down terror. He's calm now. Silent. But so distracted that, when Tanjirou ambles over to strike up a conversation, it's obvious he hardly realizes he's speaking to anyone, let alone a living person.
What he has to say, though, is worrying. He won't stop insulting Zenitsu. All this wedding nonsense, he says, is clearly a waste of time. He's convinced Zenitsu will call it off, but Tanjirou can't get a straight answer as to why. The oddest thing is that, while in every description Zenitsu gave—and every fleeting malevolent apparition Tanjirou has seen before—Kaigaku would have his sword slung on his back, right now, this morning, he has it tucked into the belt on his waist instead. What's more, he keeps clutching at the hilt. Ghosts have no scent, but Tanjirou bets if they did, Kaigaku would smell nervous. So Tanjirou asks him if there's a difference in how he's chosen to wear his sword today. Kaigaku puffs up, irritated, whirls on him—and gets a shock, finally realizing just who he's been talking to so casually, out of habit, as if he weren't dead. Immediately he starts to fade away, but before he disappears entirely, his back goes ramrod straight and he snarls out like a challenge— "You just ask him if there's a difference."
The truth Kaigaku would never admit: He's unsatisfied, insecure, and unhappy because ghosts can only ever appear as they did most commonly in life—aside from what they looked like when they died—and for Kaigaku that means he has only about three outfits to choose from at any given moment, none of them nice enough to wear on his own wedding day. It was a fight on both sides to reach an agreement for a ghost marriage, but isn't this too pathetic? How can someone as stupidly romance-addled as Zenitsu be happy with that? Not that Kaigaku cares! He doesn't!
They're not binding themselves together for a reason like that! He's just not dumb enough to show himself today in demon form, in demon robes. His Corps uniform is formal enough, but he knows it's an insult to wear that when he betrayed that organization to the death of their teacher. Zenitsu will take one look at him, he's sure, and angrily call everything off. He would if he had a brain, anyway. But, Kaigaku thinks, maybe..... if he wears his sword like he did when he and Zenitsu were both students. When Kaigaku had first left Kuwajima's house dressed this way. Before he'd rejected the necessity of the First Form, before he'd turned his back on perfecting Thunder Breathing, before— Before. Maybe Zenitsu will see it for what it is. Kaigaku is trying. He's doing the best he can.
