Does a total solar eclipse trigger singing a new dawn chorus?
"It's an empirical question!"
If you were at the @animbehsociety.bsky.social #ABS2025 session honoring Steve Nowicki you saw @rosvall-lab.bsky.social talk about this awesome work! Now in @science.org

As a final addition, my departmental colleague (@batsrkul.bsky.social) Prof. Erin Gillam and I finally got our poster presentation recorded and up. Just a couple of months late!
We looked at average explanatory power across studies in animal behavior.

I did not get a chance to upload my #ABS2025 talk because right after the conference, I did a cross country road trip to Rhode Island to get situated for my postdoc 😅
Our poster on courtship behavior and call description in female Crossodactylus schmidti (a Neotropical #frog) is now available on the #ABS2025 #VirtualMeeting platform.

Hi there #abs2025. Do we already know where #abs2026 will be? #animals #animalbehavior
Had a great time at #ABS2025! Met with old and new friends. Learned a lot about the importance of collaborations at all levels of our career path and how important is to show up and share our own experiences.
I will be sharing more of my work in animal communication in tropical forests 🌳🐸
Members of the Laskowski lab posing for a photo.
Had an amazing time at #ABS2025! So much incredible science in our field and I feel lucky to be a part of it! Great to see old friends and make new ones.
Hope to see you all next year!

Still buzzing from the society meeting! 🧠💬 From cool talks & social mixers to winning 1st poster 🏆 AND becoming grad rep for my home society, what a ride! Upward & onward🚀 #AcademicTwitter #ABS2025
Last but not least, @sekharma.bsky.social presented a poster on the influence of taxonomic bias on behavioral meta-analyses. Sekhar won the Founders Memorial Poster Award!
Huge congratulations to Sekhar!!!

Ned and Erin in front of a scientific poster
My NDSU colleague Erin Gillam @batsrkul.bsky.social and I presented a poster on "How well we explain behavior", looking at R^2 in behavioral research. This has been a fun but exhausting project, hopefully we're able to finish one day!
#ABS2025
Zach Sweep standing in front of scientific poster.
Zach estimated behavioral variation in inbred & outbred crickets, testing whether our understanding of behavioral individuality/CID/personality needs revisiting given findings in parthenogenic species.
Paper hopefully coming soon!
Zach is also joining the lab as a PhD student this fall!

Katy gave a fantastic talk on the genetic integration of behavior and morphology. Keep an eye out for the pre-print and recorded talk! Also, learn more here:

Four members of lab standing in front of ABS logo-phot wall. We're not, at all, centered.
Wonderful #ABS2025 meeting! Great to see really exciting science & catch up with great people. Four members of the lab came to the meeting this year: one new attendee (Zach Sweep), two-time attendee (Katy Takumi), many-time attendee (MA Sekhar), and me.
We all had a great time, thank you ABS!
Very happy to have attended #ABS2025. As always, a fantastic meeting with great science and great people all across the board. Got to present part of my PhD research on the heritability of cooperative behavior. New paper coming soon!!
I’m new at bluesky but I just wanted to say thank you to #ABS2025 for the wonderful conference! Thank you to everyone who attended my first talk on my postdoctoral work on weakly electric fish, I was so excited to share this research!
And that concludes my very first #ABS2025 conference! Every time I go to a conference I am reaffirmed in my passion for animal behavior and science, especially with such inspiring and fantastic people in this field! Thank you to anyone I met/reconnected/hung out with this week!
Had such a blast hearing the talks and hanging out with old and new friends at #ABS2025. Hard to leave (especially before the banquet). Thanks to all the organizers!
If you missed my talk (or you want to watch it again and again), you can see it here youtu.be/UBJFFVrkuVg
See you in Cincinnati!
Such a great talk from @erin-wall.bsky.social on humpback whale song; v cool results suggest song is acquired at feeding grounds
Hope I can re-watch in @animbehsociety.bsky.social virtual. Can't wait to read the paper!

I wish I was there to join in the excitement of this year's @animbehsociety.bsky.social meeting. Many Canadians are with you in spirit, animal behaviour colleagues!
Annie Madsen studies social dynamics in Asian 🐘 in Sri Lanka: using social networks, relationships b/w dyads persist over years, but there's been disruption over time; community clusters reveal more instability & fracturing of sub-communities since 2012. Demographic & landscape change?

Emily stands at the front of the room speaking. Slide: time is valuable with only one season to build nests. Wasps tell time with photoperiod.
Emily Laub gives a great & funny talk on social choices & time costs in paper wasps: manipulating perceived time available (photoperiod) & obs social interactions & nests. Rushed wasps w less perceived time had worse nest outcomes & fitness. Why? Fewer low stakes interactions & less choosy. #ABS2025
Excited to have presented our research on geographic differences in auditory properties of Carolina Chickadees at the Animal Behavior Conference! Grateful for the opportunity to share our work and connect with colleagues!
