I am taking my teen on a city trip to Edinburgh on Sunday (yay!) - does anyone have any favourite bookshops? Or generally things to visit/do that are not automatically on any tourist's list or make me the most boring parent ever?

Blech mit frisch gebackenen Muffins.
Eigentlich jongliere ich mehrere Deadlines. Uneigentlich fährt der Jüngste heute auf Firmtage und braucht Gebackenes. Immerhin riecht mein schlechtes Gewissen jetzt gut.

Today's challenge: trying to finish (aka write a considerable chunk of) a conference paper while 10yo is home. Wish me luck.

Der Achtjährige trällert KPop Demon Hunters und baut dabei die paar englischen Wörter ein, die er so kennt: digital humanities, tenure track, … 😅
🎶 What does it feel like, digital humanities? 🎶

It was such a joy to participate in #BritCult2025 remotely and present my research on (Inter-)Textile Practices and/as Networked Feminism this morning! Thank you so much to @susannegruss.bsky.social @sarahbusch.bsky.social and the rest of the team for making this possible! #AcademicParenting
Next week: 8 hours of teaching, a conference, a 10th birthday.
Today: deep-cleaning 9yo's room to make space for those presents (it only took us 9 hours).
Tomorrow: laundry, some very belated writing.

One of the constants of #AcademicParenting: I am on a deadline, husband has in-office meetings, one of the kids is home sick.
a breakfast bowl, matcha, and a ginormous slice of cake
Trying to buy myself a couple of working hours by bribing 9yo with a massive slice of cake and 2 Percy Jackson books (not pictured). People who tell you they would never bribe their kids are liars, don't trust them.

First work week after holidays - last week of summer break for 9yo, who is home and bored. Wish me luck. #AcademicParenting
9yo has established a family book club called "Book Love". I now have my own member's pass and I am HERE for it. #AcademicParenting #RaisingReaders
Omg the teen has a dorm room for university starting next month 🥳 #academicParenting from a different perspective 😄
Last day of school traditions: spaghetti ice-cream (the best!) and an end-of-school book (or two) for everyone. Now both kids are reading. #AcademicParenting
It's 32 degrees. Guess who will have to attend a 2-hour school concert today. In a school yard that is probably 35 degrees.

an office table full of pens, paper, books, and clutter
It's "bring your kids to work day" (aka school holidays). #AcademicParenting
(#puer is grumbling about having to write things at length for homework and I am having to remind myself that he is not calibrated to think of writing 500 words in a single sitting as the bare acceptable minimum. #AcademicParenting)
Of course the kids take turns being home sick. #AcademicParenting
2 tote bags, chocolate, pencils
Adding to my kids' substantial collection of conference tote bags (thanks to the wonderful colleagues in Pécs, who gave me an extra bag). #AcademicParenting
4yo had a meltdown last night about her small alligator teddy lacking a "proper blanket" for its makeshift bed. Think it was just referred nervous energy while trying to wind down to sleep, but of course I'm now in office trying to speedknit same blanket while reading new research

Some thoughts on #academicparenting

#academicsky
One kid is home with some stupid virus, the other had to be picked up from school because she has a tummy ache. One doctor's visit and a minor book shopping spree later she feels better because bookshops have healing powers, apparently. I wouldn't disagree. #AcademicParenting
a teapot, a mug, and an eggcup
This was meant to be a super-productive day but is instead a spontaneous home office day with a sickly 9yo (who insists on drinking her tea from an eggcup). #AcademicParenting
Kid 1: *holds up length of tape measure* this is how long it is from Kid 2’s pinky toe to his heel
Me: I’m sure he held real still for that
Kid 1: **monotone voice** he held still
I’ve either got a budding informetrics enthusiast, or possibly Wednesday Addams. Perhaps both.

My partner is on a business trip. I have a CfP to finish, a guest in my lecture, a book club meeting, & a guest lecture at another university (plus the usual teaching & organisational things) this week. We have a fail proof, colour-coded plan that assumes nobody will be sick 🤞🏻. #AcademicParenting

Both me and the 14yo are home with colds - but we are now watching Sherlock together, so it's not all bad. #AcademicParenting
jars with dragon stickers and fairy lights
Dragon light glasses & dragon eye amulets done, very little crying, very happy 9yo, very tired parents. #AcademicParenting
Telling a bunch of 9yos that paper streamers were "dragon fire"... not my brightest idea (sent from the kitchen, which I had to declare a "safe space"). #AcademicParenting
The Lenn Goodman "Companion to the Guide to the Perplexed", along with several other books, a laptop, and mood lighting.
The joy of sitting down, alone, in a quiet room to finish up a review of the new companion to the Guide can only be properly understood if you changed multiple diapers before 9am.
