The album, After the Astronaut, had been recorded and was ready to go. Capitol wanted something closer to "Pepper", the band's 1996 number one on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. What they had instead was a record dug deep into electronics, industrial rhythms, and synthesized abstraction. The label's calculation didn't add up, and the record disappeared into legal limbo.
