@karimbrohi @JAMyburgh @icuresearch
Interesting keynote from Daniel Carroll saying that the stark trial data suggesting a ban is flawed.
I’m not buying the argument that we should start using it again.

So your task is to….
1. When you praise say WHY something was good and not just that it was good.
2. Give three times as much praise as criticism.
#agn2018 #FOAMed
Think of yourself as a trainee.
Did you GET more praise than criticism as a trainee?
Think of yourself as a trainer.
Do you GIVE more praise than criticism to your trainees?
It’s likely these two don’t equal each other. #agn2018 #FOAMed
Two reasons why there might be a disconnect.
1. We don’t value praise as much as we value criticism. It burns onto our hearts and minds.
2. Praise is often vague, criticism is often specific.

Now let’s think about the 4 rules of whether you should give feedback.
Here’s a mental checklist you should go through before any feedback conversation. #agn2018 #FOAMed
Problems arise when the recipient and the giver do not have their expectations of feedback aligned.
Tip - ask and ensure that you are both talking about the same thing.

In truth we get lots of feedback in life. Exams, promotion, salary, ward rounds, M&M etc. are all forms of feedback.
We get feedback in our personal life from our spouses and friends. if you are one of those young people you might get this!! #agn2018

So what happened in that exercise. I suspect that people got 3 sorts of feedback and this differentiation is really important.
(This form the book Thanks for the feedback)

Let’s try an exercise in feedback.
Find a partner and try this exercise for 30 seconds. Be honest when you give feedback.

If feedback is so important why do we find it difficult? Maybe because like many things in life - it is better to give than receive.
#feeback #agn2018
Ask yourself these questions. In truth our view of ourselves is not the same as the world sees us and we need feedback to understand this.
#agn2018
If you think feedback is important (it is) and you accept that Roger Federer gets better partly because he has a coach - why don’t you?
Are you better at medicine than @rogerfederer is at Tennis?

(spoiler - you’re probably not ;-)...

So here’s some challenging questions about you and your feedback culture. How would you answer these questions?
#agn2018
You cannot know these yourself, you must understand how others see you too.
Our ‘self view’ is an illusion.
