Policemen among nine killed in JAAC-led violent protests MUZAFFARABAD: The violent protests organised by the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) has so far claimed nine lives, the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) government said on Tuesday, with over 200 others injured. The AJK government also appealed to the people to remain peaceful. It also asked the citizens to ignore the fake news spread through social media under a heinous agenda and only share reliable and authentic information. The remaining three are the policemen who sacrificed their lives while performing their duties. As far as the injured are concerned, the AJK government said around 172 police officials sustained injuries, with 12 of them in critical condition. On the other hand, the AJK government said 50 citizens were also among injured. The three police officials were martyred and nine others were injured in the Dhirkot area of Bagh district when armed men opened gunfire. One of the martyred policeman, Tahir Rafi, was from Muzaffarabad district. The other two -- Khursheed and Jameel -- hailed from Bagh. The family members of the martyred and injured police officials demanded that their killers should be brought to justice immediately. In this connection, the government sources said law enforcement agencies were taking strict action against the armed men. "No armed group can be allowed to take law into its own hand," they made it clear. JAAC’s demands unconstitutional, organised conspiracy: Sources MUZAFFARABAD: Negotiations between the Government of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) have officially failed, as sources shared the underlying causes for the breakdown. According to the sources, the JAAC transformed what began as a protest over public demands into a movement aligned with an anti-state agenda. It is despite the fact that, the sources say, the government accepted 48 out of 50 demands presented by the JAAC during a 13-hour negotiation session. Moreover, the demands related to legislative changes were deemed to be motivated by a desire to create disorder and pursue questionable objectives in Azad Kashmir. It shows, the sources mentioned, that the primary intent of the JAAC is to exert undue pressure on the government and gain control over state resources. Also, a foreign agenda is at play behind the JAAC’s demands, raising concerns about the integrity of the movement, they added. Given these facts, the sources argue that the nature of the JAAC’s demands suggests existence of a deliberate and organised conspiracy. At the same time, they argue that many of these demands are unconstitutional and run contrary to the genuine wishes and interests of the Kashmiri people. In May last year, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had approved the immediate provision of Rs23 billion to AJK after protests in the region. Back then AJK Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwarul Haq had said India attempted to create chaos and mayhem in the state but failed due to the people who could not tolerate Indian interference in internal matters. Around 100 policemen were injured and a sub-inspector martyred during the violent protests.
