“You know, when I woke up at Ziegler-s-- Dr-- Angela’s operation table after the surgery, I knew I had a new chance.” Genji said, staring at him and Cole’s intertwined hands over the table. “I mean, of course I knew.” “But?” It didn’t take a genius to infer how there was a ‘but’ coming, sure, but he didn’t doubt his boyfriend also and already knew him enough to see that coming. Besides, despite all the jokes Gabriel used to make about them being dumb before they actually realized their feelings were reciprocated and got together, Cassidy wasn’t stupid and neither was he; it was obvious something else was in store when Genji said that. Just… said ‘but’ wasn’t prefacing something bad, but the opposite. “But knowing it was one thing, and already having experienced a ton of examples of all I can have is a very different one.” Genji continued, smiling. “And there’s still so much ahead too.” That wasn’t to say all his struggles had dissipated. Far from it, for there remained a bunch of issues about his new body and worries inside his mind to overcome. But right there, beside his partner at work and in life, he was hopeful.
When she moved, starting to get up even if for just a little while, Reinhardt slid his hand over hers to wordlessly ask Ana to stay where she was. And, filled with what could easily be curiosity, she did. “Let me make the tea.” All Ana needed to do in order to convey her next response was tilting her head and smirking a little. “Oh, come on! We’ve known each other for half our lives now, I’m confident I can make tea the exact way you like it.” He said, so in earnest her smirk turned into a wider, softer smile. After all, if there was someone who could disarm her so quickly with just words, it was him. “Alright, but I won’t be an easy judge just because I love you.” He instantly let out a brief but roaring laugh, taking her hand in his to leave a kiss on the back. Only then Reinhardt proceeded to move.
Credit when it was due, he didn’t need to ask once when searching for anything needed; a testament of how familiar he was with Ana’s kitchen she couldn’t help but relish in even when it was a detail she had been aware of for long. It was no surprise, since he had been a constant visitor since their early Overwatch days, since Fareeha was very young and things with Sam weren’t even completely broken yet. “By the way, did you hear the kids are planning to do a welcome party for the new people?” Was his next comment, once the teapot was already on the stove and he could sit back for a while. “Of course, and I’ve been thinking.” Ana already knew what he was going for, and turning the tables was so tempting she didn’t hesitate. “Will you be my date?” In the way Reinhardt laughed again, it was crystal clear she had succeeded. “Why, obviously! But will you let me be the one asking next time?”
