as the Legislative Dinner at the Elks Lodge. A lot of small businesses were using this as the chance to help push for revitalization on Main Street. Jane and I decided we should go to represent our store, Little Beauty's Boutique, while Malala and Zenobia manned the fort. We agreed to dress in our finest, but deep down I hated wearing formal clothing. A lot of it made me uncomfortable to wear, even back when I had a part time analytics job in college. Later, while I was getting ready, Michael came home from his shift at the police department and was exhausted when he saw me trying that dress. “You going to the Legislative Dinner?” “Yes, but wearing clothes like this sucks.” “It may suck, but you must do it for those you love. Like your friends and me. I calmly got myself ready with a bag with my iPad ready in case I need to draw something as a coping mechanism. These gatherings drive me up the wall. I kissed Michael as he rested on the couch. “Don’t worry about me. I’ll be fine,” I told him as I was heading out the door to meet Jane. But, I can tell this was going to be that kind of night. At the dinner, I was trying to calmly enjoy the dinner. But anytime I try to socialize, I felt I had nothing to say. So I try to draw, but I felt stuck because the space the iPad had to be. So I felt isolated on an island while Jane was socializing, trying to help push support to fix up Main Street. I didn’t know what to do except look up stuff on my phone. And then, as I was looking up articles hoping to find some inspiration for art, I heard a familiar voice behind me. “Babe? Are you enjoying this?” I turn to see Michael, all nice and dressed up in nicer clothes and that warm smile of his. “What are you doing here, Mike?” “I got a message from Jane saying you’re struggling and needed me to be with you.” His presence was welcoming to me. After being alone for so many years, I finally have a person who was there to take care of me. At one moment, it was time for a dance.…

After that recent pic, I felt like something nice and positive was needed. So this cute moment along with the story was created.

While this is pic wasn’t the first of Michael in his pre-colonial outfit, it pretty much set the blueprint for this historical AU series. Basically, it just shows him wondering through the wild grass of the San Joaquin Valley possibly on a hunt. What is he looking at? Who knows? It may be his prey. It did spook those birds over there. I actually drew him first using the many previous pics I drew and historical anthropology pics made of the Yokuts as reference. Everything else was done later, using pics I took of the area outside of town to help me recreate the valley floor and foothills. Overall, it’s still one of my favorite pictures of both Michael and landscapes.

This one pic, and the Pa’ashi pic, was another fun lesson of Yokut research. In this case, to depict Michael being comfortable at a campfire, I drew a Yokut reed hut to provide him a place of rest for the night. As a kid going to museums, I would see these things so I had some idea what to expect. But, I really had to learn the general shape and how to recreate the construction techniques in a drawing form. I think I did a great job on it since I rarely draw buildings. Also, learning how to draw fire like that turned into adding a new technique I will use in future art.

This pic was both fun and hard to make at the same time. The fun was drawing a scene at Pa’ashi (big water in Yokut), now Tulare Lake, since it would be easy to draw a lake. The hard part was figuring out how to draw stuff made out of the Tule Reeds like the boat and the hut that came later. After carefully looking at several pics of such boats, I did my best in drawing one with an old ink drawing as reference for Michael’s pose. Overall, this was a fun pic to make.

I feel like these pics of Michael in pre-colonial Yokut garb as the history project I wish I had in fourth grade; writing and drawing a character to help learn about California’s Native history and culture.
